
How to pick the right infrared heat for your bathroom
When you’re picking out an infrared lamp for the bathroom, the instinct is usually to go for the most powerful one on the shelf. But here’s the thing: more power isn’t always better. If you overkill it, you’re just throwing money away on your electric bill and risking a burnout. It’s all about the size of the room.
Getting the wattage right
If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room—something under 4m²—a small 250W to 400W shortwave lamp does the trick. These are great because the heat hits your skin instantly. You don’t have to wait for the whole room to warm up; you just feel it. For those mid-sized bathrooms (between 4m² and 8m²), you’ll want to look at 600W to 1000W. Just be careful. If you cram a 1200W unit into a tiny space, you’re likely to overheat the housing and trigger the thermal cut-off. Not a great way to start your morning.
Why the “IP55” thing actually matters
Bathrooms are brutal on electronics. Between the steam from the shower and the occasional splash, it’s a recipe for a short circuit. That’s why we stick with IP55-rated housings. Think of it as a protective shield for the wiring and the quartz glass. A standard lamp will just rust out or fry pretty quickly in a humid room. The IP55 seal keeps the gunk and moisture out so the lamp actually lasts.
The trade-off
Higher wattage means you get warm faster. It’s a trade-off, really. A 1000W lamp is incredibly fast, but it pulls a lot of juice. If you’re installing a few of these in one area, keep an eye on your circuit breaker. If you overload the amperage, you’ll be tripping the switch more often than you’d like. A better way to do it? Zone your heating. Put the heavy-hitting lamp right over the shower where you actually need that blast of heat, and use lower wattage units by the vanity. It’s a much smarter way to use your energy.
