How to pick the right infrared heater for your bathroom
When you’re shopping for an IP65 infrared heater, your first instinct might be to just grab the one with the highest wattage. Don’t do that. It’s not about raw power; it’s about finding the right balance for your space so you aren’t wasting electricity or turning your bathroom into a sauna.
Let’s talk wattage and space
Here is the thing about infrared: it heats you, not the air. If you’ve got a tiny bathroom—we’re talking under 4m²—a 250W to 400W lamp is usually plenty. If you throw an 800W beast in a closet-sized room, you’ll end up with these annoying “hot spots.” Plus, the thermostat will kick in and out constantly, which just wears out the equipment faster. For those mid-sized bathrooms (around 4m² to 8m²), you’ll probably want a single 600W-800W unit or maybe two smaller lamps. And if you have a massive master bath? Don’t just buy one giant heater. I’d suggest a few lower-wattage heaters spread out. It makes the warmth feel more even across the floor, which is exactly what you want when you step out of the shower.
The deal with IP65 ratings
You absolutely need that IP65 rating. It’s what keeps the steam and splashes away from the electrics, so you don’t have to worry about safety. But there is a small catch. Because the housing is waterproof and sealed, it has a bit more “bulk” to it. This means it takes a few extra seconds to hit full blast compared to those naked industrial tubes you see in warehouses. Just keep that in mind when you’re setting your timers.
Comfort vs. Intensity
High wattage feels great for a second, but if you’re standing too close, it can actually feel like it’s stinging your skin. The trick is to balance the power with where you mount it. If you put a high-power lamp on a low ceiling, it’s going to feel way too intense. In those cases, go with a lower wattage or a wider emitter to soften the heat. Think about the whole volume of the room, not just the floor space. Your wallet—and your skin—will thank you.
